Dear Revdex.com, This letter is in response to a complaint by Mr. [redacted] about a dye failure on a dress we cleaned. It is a black dress with a sewn-on white trim. The dress care label states "Dry clean only" with no other qualifying statements. After cleaning in a hydrocarbon solvent, which is a...

mild solvent with a long history of being safe, the dress came out with a distinct blue color on the trim. I tried to remove the dye migration but every technique only caused the black dye to bleed more. I wrote a note to the customer explaining that the dye was not dry clean (or wet clean because it bled to water also) safe as it had been labeled, it should be returned to the store where it had been purchased as "uncleanable".Mr. [redacted] called and told me that he had tried to return the dress to the store and the store owner, who is a friend of his, told him there had been no other complaints about this dress, that she personally owned this dress and had had it cleaned many times with no problems, and so obviously I had done something wrong.I asked Mr [redacted] to bring the dress in so that I could test it in front of him so that I could demonstrate that the fabric bled no matter how it was cleaned. I was able to show him that the black fabric bled to two kinds of solvent and water. I explained to him that there is a national law, written in 1987 and updated every few years, that says that every garment must be labeled with a permanent tag which gives one safe method of cleaning. It isn't legal to manufacture a garment that has no safe method for cleaning. Even "spot clean only" is a legal tag if the dyes or trim are too delicate for normal cleaning.We have currently re-cleaned the dress two more times but I am not satisfied with the result as the trim is less blue but still not bright white as it was before cleaning. We have also emailed [redacted], the manufacturer, but only received a response that seems to be a stock letter to a retailer. We will try contacting them again but are not too hopeful.I feel very bad for Mr. [redacted] who should be getting a different dress to replace one that is uncleanable. I really did clean the dress according to the care label and it should have come out as good as new. I can't understand how his dress failed and the shop owners' dress cleans up nicely. Perhaps the manufacturer used a different bolt of fabric on this particular dress than on the one the shop owner wears. In any case, we feel that the real culprit is a poor dye job and not improper cleaning that caused the damage to this dress. I am sorry that I didn't think to tell the clerk to verbally tell him there was a problem when he picked up his order. I just thought the note would explain the problem.
