Beware of Contractors
The actual company is great! Great customer service! BEWARE-- However, they use back alley contractors who are not afraid to sacrifice their integrity for money. For example-- their contractor appeared for a rattling noise in the A/C unit. It was a 100 degree day in Texas. He disassembled the entire unit, and determined that it was installation error (years after assembly?). Therefore it was an exclusion under to policy. He qoted me $400.00 to fix it. The AC still worked, it just made a noise, so I asked him to just reassemble it, as I wanted to get bids. He informed me that unless I paid him $400.00 he would do no further work. I was informed that the $400.00 was for an estimated 5 HOURS of work. As I had a newborn at home, I was at work all day, it was over 100 degrees, and I couldn't get a technician out that day to reassemble the piece, I instructed him to make the repair. What choice did I have? The contractor knew he had me in a corner. It took him 26 MINUTES to reassemble the motor and get out the door. Mind you, under his billing scheme, he earned approximately $800.00 per hour. When I complained to home warranty of america, their notes reflected my understanding the of the contract. They tried to contact the contractor, and were unable to successfully resolve the dispute. I have subsequently learned the contractor is by all definitions a fly-by-night operation. No internet presence, reviews, BBB rating, nothing. Just a guy in a truck. Who knows how they vetted this contractor, or what standard he was held to-- by my inspection, none. To think I let him in my home. It would have been cheaper to just hire someone. So good job, they tricked me.
